An unusual form of fishing - Chinese Fishing Net, Cochin

Besides the Dutch Palace and Jew town, there is another exciting site named Chinese fishing nets in Kochi (Cochin) city of Kerala state, India. The Chinese fishing nets, aka Cheena Vala, are fixed land installations for an unusual form of fishing - shore-operated lift nets. Each structure has a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end.

The system is balanced sufficiently such that the weight of a person walking along the main bean is enough to cause the net to descend into the sea. The fishermen leave the net for some time, say about a few minutes, before pulling on ropes. Now, you can find fish caught in the net.

You can watch these different kinds of fishing nets from your boat in Port Kochi.

Happy travelling.
