Cricket Chronicles: The Enduring Legacy of Madras United Club

Image
In the bustling city of Chennai, where modern life revolves around the popular OMRs and ECRs, there lies a lesser-known locality that remains hidden from the public eye—Original Madras, encompassing George Town and Park Town. Today, it is a place unfamiliar even to the locals. However, nestled within this unassuming neighborhood is a historic institution that played a pivotal role in shaping the sporting landscape of the city—the Madras United Club. The story of the Madras United Club begins with Buchi Babu Naidu, the revered pioneer of Indian cricket and widely regarded as the Father of Madras Cricket. Recognizing the absence of organized clubs to foster teams and facilitate competitive matches, Naidu rallied young individuals from affluent Madras families and emphasized the need for a dedicated club. Taking matters into his own hands, he secured a site on the Esplanade and personally funded the leveling of the ground, transforming it into an ideal cricket venue. This momentous occasi...

The Gymkhana Club

Image
The Gymkhana Club is one of the prestigious clubs of Madras city. It is a famous landmark of the city. It is located on Anna Salai in the Island Grounds locality. It bears door number 1 of Anna Salai. The Club was started in April 1884 CE. Brig. General Johnson and Brig. General Alexander Arbuthnot penned the proposal to form this Club on the land that belonged to the army. Johnson named the Club Gymkhana, and he formulated the Club's rules and objectives. The membership was initially restricted to British executives, Garrison members, and a few selected high-profile Indians. Today, the campus is spread across 7 acres of land. But, initially, it just had a tent in the open ground. It all changed after the Raja of Venkatagiri (Muthukrishna Yachendra) donated land and the present building to the Club in 1886 CE. The Club grew and added more and more games/sports with generous donations from the South Indian Zamindars (who called themselves the Rajas). The Club brought footba...

Cosmopolitan Club Travancore Pavilion

Image
When Chennai was under the control of the East India Company, the Madras Club was formed in 1832 CE. In those days, it was the center of social activity in Chennai. However, the Club did not satisfy the social needs of the rich Indians, as only the Europeans were allowed to become members of the Club. In 1873 CE, the Cosmopolitan Club was set up mainly to enable affluent Indians to have social intercourse with the Europeans. Although the Cosmopolitan Club was set up on Moore's Road in the Thousand Lights area, it soon moved to Mount Road (Anna Salai). It still remains in the same location. However, the Club extended its operations beyond its complex. It acquired the Travancore Pavilion in the Nandanam area in 1938 CE. Travancore Pavilion is named after the Raja of Travancore, Padmanabha Dasa Bala Varma, who was one of the club's founding members. Today, this annex has many recreational facilities. Importantly, it has a prestigious 18-hole golf course. It is one such golf co...

At the heart of this vibrant area stands the Guindy suburban railway station, a pivotal transportation hub. Surprisingly, many frequent visitors to Guindy may remain unaware of the expansive Guindy Race Course situated in close proximity to the busy railway station and bus terminal. Only those who actively follow and partake in horse racing or have deep-rooted ties to the area are likely acquainted with the Guindy Race Course, which happens to be India's oldest. The origins of this race course trace back to 1777 CE when lands from the Velachery and Venkatapuram villages were designated for horse racing purposes, long before the official establishment of the club in 1837 CE. The course's history has been far from seamless. Racing events were irregular in the early years and even halted briefly during the threat of Hyder Ali's invasion of Madras. It w...
