Parthasarathy Temple, Guruvayur, Kerala

Besides the famous Guruvayurappan temple and Mammiyoor Shiva temple, Guruvayur town in Kerala also has another small ancient temple named Parthasarathy temple. 'Parthasarathy' means 'chariot driver of Partha (Arjun)' - Lord Krishna. There is a famous temple for Lord Parthasarathy temple in Triplicane, Chennai. Even though the Parthasarathy temple of Guruvayur is not as renowned as the Chennai Parthasarathy temple, it is prevalent within Guruvayur/Thrissur region.

Parthasarathy temple is located quite near to the Guruvayurappan temple in Guruvayur town. It is situated north of the sacred banyan tree Manjulal of Guruvayurappan temple. This temple was formerly called Thiruthiyil Thevar and was located amidst fields on three sides and the banks of a river. Thiruthiyil Thevar, later on, came to be named Parathasarathy. The Sri Shankaracharya's followers finished this temple's work and were also responsible for allocating the idols of Lord Krishna in the temple. Hence, this temple is believed to be at least 2500 years old (Adi Shankaracharya's period).

The beautiful icon of the main deity of the temple, Lord Parthasarathy, resembles the icon of Guruvayurappan. The temple also houses other shrines such as Ganesha and Bhagavathi.

When you visit Guruvayur, don't miss to visit this temple.

Happy travelling.

  1. Good information though, Adi Shankara's period stated by you is a wild imagination. He belongs to 8/9th century AD.
