32 Water bodies of Nellaiyappar Temple

I have been extensively documenting the Kantimati Sameta Nellaiyappar Temple in Tirunelveli, focusing on its intricate architecture, layout, iconography, deities, inscriptions, festivals and other notable aspects. In this episode, I will provide list of holy waterbodies.

Kantimati Sameta Nellaiyappar temple has 32 teerthams (holy waterbodies). Only 13 of them are located within the temple premises. Few of them are river ghats and ponds; the rest are holy wells.




1) Sindhu Poondurai Teertham: Located about 3 kms from the temple; it's a bath ghat of Tampraparani; it's part of current Junction locality. Read my article here.

2) Pottramarai Teertham: Found in the northeast corner within the Kantimati Ammai Temple complex. Shiva is manifested as holy water here. Read my article about this waterbody here.

3) Kari Uru Mariya Teertham: Situated in the western prakara (circumambulatory corridor) of Kantimati shrine. Click here to know more about the legend connecting this holy waters.

4) Padalan Kampai Teertham: Kampa Teertha is a small pond located inside the Kamakshi temple. It is believed that there was a river Kampa was flowing here. It is located at about 2 km from the main temple. Click here to know more.

5) Varuna Nar Kampai Teertham: Holy well found near the Madappalli (temple kitchen).

6) Koova Teertham: Holy well located inside the inner prakara of Kantimati shrine.

7) Rudra Teertham: Holy well found north of the Karumari Kumaran shrine.

8) Chakra Teertham: Holy well located at the northwest corner of Pottramarai Teertham.

9) Agni Teertham: Holy well situated south of Chakra Teertham.

10) Lakshmi Teertham: Holy well found north of Chakra Teertham.

11) Dharma Devathai Teertham: Holy well located west of Rudra Teertham.

12) Pisaasu Mosana Teertham: Holy well in front of the Bhairava shrine.

13) Deva Teertham: Holy well situated west of the Bhairava shrine.

14) Kubera Teertham: Holy well located west of Deva Teertham.

15) Vaishnava Deva Teertham: Holy well in the West Mada Street.

16) Pradyumna Teertham: Holy well located north of Vaishnava Deva Teertham.

17) Sarva Teertham: Situated in the frontside mandapa of Nellaiyappar shrine.

18) Chandra Pushkarani: The holy pond, popularly known as Theppa Kulam, located at about 400 meters east of Nellaiyappar temple entrance. To know more about this site, read here.

22) Rudra Paada Teertham: River ghat found north of Sindhu Poondurai.

23) Munivarga Teertham: River ghat located south of Rudra Paada Teertham.

25) Agastya Teertham: River ghat found south of Sindhu Poondurai.

26) Devapandi Teertham: River ghat located south of Agastya Teertham.

27) Sanatkumara Teertham: River ghat found south of Devapandi Teertham.

28) Durga Teertham: River ghat situated south of Sanatkumara Teertham.

29) Gautama Teertham: River ghat found south of Durga Teertham.

30) Kurukuthurai Teertham: Located south of Gautama Teertham. A famous bathing ghat of Tamraparani river. Read more about this site here.

31) Agni Teertham: Bathing ghat in front of the Agneeswarar Temple in Melanatham, about 3.5 km from the main temple.

32) Karunya Teertham: Situated west of Agni Teertham.
