When we think of Navapashanam deitiesknown for their medicinal and spiritual significance, our minds often go to the ancient and sacred shrine at Palani. However, tucked away in the quiet locality of Hastinapuram near Chrompet in Chennai lies a relatively unknown temple where Lord Murugan is enshrined as a Navapashanam icon—an unexpected find in a bustling metropolitan city.

What is Navapashanam?

Navapashanam refers to a rare amalgamation of nine sacred herbal and mineral elements believed to possess immense healing powers. The tradition of crafting icons from Navapashanam is attributed to Siddhar Bhogar, a legendary saint closely associated with Lord Murugan worship. Temples featuring these unique deities are exceptionally rare, making the discovery of such a shrine in Chennai truly remarkable.

The Temple at Hastinapuram

Located in Hastinapuram, a developing suburb near Chrompet, this modern temple might appear simple from the outside, but it holds deep spiritual significance. The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, who is worshipped here in his Navapashanam form—a unique representation in this part of Tamil Nadu.

While the temple may not boast ancient architecture or towering gopurams, the presence of the Navapashanam icon itself makes it noteworthy. Devotees believe that prayers offered here—especially during special days like Karthigai, Thai Poosam, and Skanda Shashti—carry powerful vibrations.

Other Deities

Along with the main sanctum for Murugan, the temple houses shrines for:

  • Jalakandeswara

  • Meenakshi

  • The Siddha who found this temple

  • Other few deities

Visiting the Temple

This shrine is located in the congested Masjid street, accessible from Chrompet railway station and nearby bus stops. Despite being situated in an urban residential area, the temple remains relatively less known—even to seasoned temple explorers in Chennai.

Happy travelling.
