Mysore Zoo

Image
Almost all major cities have zoological parks. But, Mysuru zoo has its unique charm. Whoever visits Mysuru never misses coming here.  Founded in 1892 by Mysore ruler Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur, it is one of the oldest zoological parks of the entire India. The credit for the beautiful landscape goes to the German Horticulturist, Mr. G.H. Krumbeigal.  Initially, it occupied just 10.9 acres. After multiple expansions, it now spreads over 157 acres, including 77 acres of Karanji Lake. Animals might not feel this zoo as a prison but as a forest. Named after the founder but popularly known as Mysore Zoo, it is a pioneer in recreating the natural habitat for different species of animals. Also, it is the first park in India to build large ape enclosures. The enclosure that was built in 1911, is considered a heritage building now. Thanks to the Mysore Maharaja for introducing many animals from European countries to Mysore. During his tours, he used to bring different species of ...

Birding in Chennai

Image
Garganeys are from Europe. They migrate to India during the winter season. It is such an enchanting sight to view hundreds of Garganeys together. You don't need to travel to North America to watch the rare and beautiful Great blue heron. If you have sharp eyes and patience, you could easily find those birds here. The once-endangered Egrets are found in large numbers. They are beauties of Almighty's creations. Black Drango - I am running short of words to describe this incredibly attractive creature. It is said that the Barn Swallows are the most widespread swallows on the globe. Perhaps to prove that, they are abundant in this locality. I always wonder which is more beautiful - King Fisher or Blue Tailed Bee Eater. Even after watching them together for hours on the same site, I could not determine. Many more migratory birds and even the common birds are found here. If you wonder, which place I have been talking about....you may not believe it. I am talking about the highly poll...

Pallikkaranai Wet Land

Image
Pallikkaranai Wetland stands as the sole remaining wetland ecosystem within Chennai city limits, covering just 80 square kilometers today. In the past, its expanse was far greater. This marshland hosts a more diverse range of bird species than even the Vedantangal bird sanctuary. Regrettably, the count of observable bird species here diminishes with each passing year. Tragically, the wetland has suffered extensive encroachment, including the construction of an IT Park by the Government. Consequently, one is now more likely to encounter apartment complexes than the once-abundant birdlife in this wetland. Happy travelling!
