Tiruvotriyur Dakshinamurti Temple

Chennai, the gateway to South India, is a city that has a lot of tourist sites in and around. The tourist sites in Chennai include some important Hindu temples. Tiruvotriyur is a small town near Chennai, which has been popular for the past several centuries, mainly due to the magnificent temple of Tyagaraja and Vadivudai Amman. This article is about a small lesser known temple of Dakshinamurti situated near this magnificent temple.

Dakshinamurti is a form of Lord Shiva. He is considered the Lord of Knowledge, and we can find Dakshinamurti's image as the southern niche icon in all Dravida Shiva temples. However, it is rare to find a separate temple for Dakshinamurti. Also, the gigantic icon of Dakshinamurti faces north, which is unusual.

The unique temple was built by a Siddhar (a saint) around 400 years ago. Also, there is Vallabha Ganapati, a five-headed Ganesha seated on a lion. The metal image of Dakshinamurti looks beautiful.

When visiting Tiruvottiyur, visit more than just the famous Tyagaraja temple. Ensure that you also see this unique temple of Dakshinamurti.

Happy travelling.
