Chennai ICF Railway Museum

The Rail Museum, located in Chennai, is a unique and interesting tourist site. However, it is unfortunate that it is being neglected by many citizens of Chennai. Even most people in Chennai are unaware that there is such a museum in their city.

Rail Museum is located in the ICF area near Villivakkam in Chennai. The surroundings of the site where the Rail Museum is located are in the residential area of Indian Southern Railway staff. The locality is comparatively clean and green and also less congested. Well, there is at least some benefit for this museum to being unknown to the public. :-)

Indian Railways has a history of around 150 years. To display and showcase the artifacts of the heritage of Indian Railways, the Railway Museum was started in Chennai in 2002 CE. There is another railway museum in New Delhi, the capital city of India.

The Railway Museum of Chennai will be the ideal picnic spot if you plan to visit with your kids. The toy train is one of the major attractions for children. There is a children's park too.

The museum has two indoor exhibits. One exhibit has some running models of trains. Another indoor gallery has a lot of models of different kinds of railway coaches of various periods. I just learned that there used to be double-decker trains and all. It is really amazing to find such rare models over here. The indoor gallery also houses many old materials, such as the clock used by railways in the past and various wooden models of trains. It also has some old railway photographs on display.

The highlight of the railway museum is the outdoor exhibit. In the outdoor exhibit, you can find various kinds of coaches, engines, bogies and trolleys. Whether it is a steam engine, Himalayan Mountain (Narrow Gauge) steam engine, diesel locomotive, or electric locomotive, it is a beautiful experience to watch all these in a single site. It is interesting to know that the steam engine was used as ploughing engine in England in the 1800s. Various kinds of railway cranes are present in this museum, which cannot be typically seen anywhere else.

It is definitely a unique tourist site that should be there in your Chennai travel itinerary.

Happy travelling.
