Nandalal Temple, Bishnupur

Bishnupur, a town in the Bankura district of West Bengal, is approximately 160 kilometers from Kolkata, the capital of the state. This town is renowned for its 17th and 18th-century terracotta temples and Baluchari sarees. In this article, we'll delve into the history and architecture of the beautiful yet lesser-known Nandalal Temple in Bishnupur.

History:

In ancient times, the area surrounding Bishnupur was known as the Mallabhum region. This region, also referred to as the Bishnupur Kingdom, was ruled by the Malla dynasty for many centuries and remained largely untouched by Muslim or Mughal invasions. The dynasty was founded by Adi Malla.

Bishnupur gained prominence during the reign of King Bir Hambir, who introduced the worship of Madan Mohan (Lord Krishna). During his reign and that of King Bir Singha, numerous beautiful brick temples were constructed.

Due to the scarcity of stone in Bengal, the Malla kings turned to terracotta as an alternative building material, resulting in the creation of elaborately decorated temples during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Temple Architecture and Layout:

Bishnupur is home to seven Eka Ratna (single pinnacled) temples, with the Nandalal Temple being the first in this group. It is located near the Dalmadal Canon. In earlier times, these laterite temples were adorned with stucco images, but much of this intricate work has been lost over time.

The Nandalal Temple is surrounded by beautiful gardens, enhancing its serene and picturesque setting. This south-facing temple is built on a square plan with a single tower resting on a curved roof. Like many other temples in Bishnupur, it is dedicated to Lord Krishna. However, the temple currently does not house any deity. The exterior of the temple is plain, lacking any decoration.

The exact details of who built the Nandalal Temple are unknown, but based on its architectural style, it is believed to date back to the 17th century CE.

The Nandalal Temple is a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Bishnupur. Its serene surroundings and historical significance make it a noteworthy destination for anyone interested in exploring the ancient temples of West Bengal.

Happy travelling.
