Manimangalam Kailasanathar Temple

Manimangalam, a quaint locality nestled near Tambaram, a suburb of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, holds within its boundaries a rich tapestry of history. It is the very site where the epic battle between the Chalukya King Pulikesin and the Pallava King Narasimha Pallava unfolded in the 7th century CE. Amidst this historical backdrop, several ancient temples stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Today, we embark on a journey to discover the marvels of one such ancient temple in this locality — the Kailasanathar Temple.

History:

Steeped in the grandeur of Chola architecture, the Kailasanathar Temple stands as a testament to the artistry and devotion of its builders.

Temple Layout:

Approaching the east-facing temple, one is greeted by a vision of renewed splendor. Extensively renovated, the temple gleams anew, with the granite sanctum sanctorum housing the presiding deity, Shiva Linga, known as Kailasanathar.

A majestic tower, or Raja Gopuram, might be absent, yet the sanctum radiates divine presence. Adjacent to the main shrine, a separate south-facing shrine is dedicated to the serene Goddess Gnanambikai. Adorned with four arms and standing gracefully, she exudes an aura of wisdom and grace.

At the heart of the temple complex, the Nandi Mandapa and the sacred bali peetha face the sanctum.

The exterior wall around the sanctorum has the niche images of Nardana Ganapati, Dakshninamurti, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Vishnu Durga.

The icons of Chandikeshwara, Navagraha and Bhairava are also found in the temple.

Within the prakara, or outer courtyard, lie the sanctuaries of Selva Vinayaka and Shanmukha, the latter adorned with exquisite beauty. Shanmukha, seated regally on a peacock, manifests with six faces and twelve arms, surrounded by the divine energy of his consorts.

As we conclude our journey through the Kailasanathar Temple, may the echoes of ancient prayers and timeless devotion resonate within us, guiding our paths with blessings and grace.

Happy travelling.
