Rameswaram is a popular town located in South India. It is famous mainly due to the temple of Rameshwar (Lord Shiva). People from all over India visit Kasi as well as Rameswaram as part of their pilgrimage. Rameswarar town is located in an island. The island is called as Pamban island.
The Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge, which connects Pamban island to the mainland India. It was opened on 24th February 1914 CE. This is the first sea bridge of India. Till the Bandra-Worli Sea link was opened in 2010 CE, it remained as the longest sea bridge in India. The bridge is around 2016 meters long
This cantilever bridge has a bascule section that can be opened to allow the ships to pass through. The entire bridge mainly the bascule section is a major tourist attraction in Rameswaram.
