Vaishnavi Devi of South India

Vaishnavi Devi Temple (Vaishno Devi) in Jammu and Kashmir is a well-known pilgrimage site. Similarly, Chennai in South India has its own Vaishnavi Devi temple, which, while not as famous, holds significance for devotees.

Located in Thirumullaivayal, a village between Ambattur and Avadi near Chennai, this temple stands alongside several ancient shrines in the area. Although not historically old, it is an important place of worship.

Sri Parthasarathy, son of Indian national leader Srinivasa Iyengar, received the idol of Vaishnavi Devi as a gift from an unknown person. Deeply moved by its beauty, he built this temple in 1954. It remains a privately managed temple, well-maintained and set in a peaceful locality.

The temple's main deity, Vaishnavi Devi, is strikingly beautiful, explaining Parthasarathy’s devotion in establishing this shrine. The complex also houses icons of Ganesha and Murugan, along with a small shrine for Ganesha near a sacred tree and another for Dakshinamurti. A set of Navagraha (nine planetary deities) is also installed. At the entrance, two small icons of Hayagriva and Agastya welcome visitors.

With its serene atmosphere, neat surroundings, and captivating deity, this temple is a hidden gem worth visiting in Chennai.

 Happy travelling.
