Tondiarpet Arunachaleswarar Temple - Chennai, India

Tondiarpet, a densely populated locality in North Chennai, is home to a lesser-known Shiva temple situated about 0.5 km from Apollo Hospital.

The Arunachaleswarar Temple, built in 1779 CE, is a modest east-facing shrine without a tower. The sanctum houses a small Shiva Linga, worshiped as Arunachaleswar. Adjacent to it is the shrine of Goddess Abitakujambal. In front of the sanctum, the flagstaff and Nandi are positioned, facing the deity.

At the temple entrance, icons of Nardana Ganesh and Subramanya are placed, while Kodi Mara Vinayaka is located near the flagstaff.

The prakara features images of Bhairava, Surya, Ganesha, Nagas, and the Nalvar. There are also shrines dedicated to Maha Ganapati and Subramanya with his consorts, Valli and Devasena.

The temple's niche images include Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Vishnu, Brahma, and Durga, with Chandikeswara in his customary position. The wall surrounding the Abitakujambal shrine is adorned with niche images of Ganambikai, Roudri, Vaishnavi, Brahmi, Chamundeeswari, and Chandikeswari.

Additional shrines within the temple complex include those for Nataraja with Sivakami, Somaskanda, and utsava images. The outer corridor houses an icon of Durga, along with separate shrines for Shaneeswara and the Navagrahas.

Happy travelling.
