Choolai Angalamman Temple, Chennai, India

The Angalamman Temple, located in the Choolai area of northern Chennai, is one of the city's well-known shrines dedicated to the Goddess. The temple is always bustling with devotees. Originally a village temple, it appears to have been expanded over time to include various other deities.

The temple is divided into two main sections. The first is dedicated to Angalamman, where the sanctum houses a large red-colored stucco image of the Goddess holding a child in her arms. In front of this, there is a smaller idol of Angalamman. The corridor surrounding her shrine features another Goddess image, while the entrance is adorned with images of village deities and Ganesha. A temple tank is located opposite the Angalamman shrine.

The second section of the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Viswanathar. A small icon of Visalakshi is enshrined separately. The niches feature images of Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Vishnu, Brahma, and Durga, while Chandikeswarar is positioned in his customary location. Additional shrines in this section house Ganesha, Murugan, Sivakami-Nataraja, and Bhairava.

The outer corridor contains shrines for Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Virat Vishva Brahmam, and Murugan with Valli and Devasena. The Navagraha icons in this temple are distinctive, as each is accompanied by his respective vahana (mount). Being a traditional village temple, the outer corridor also has bricks worshipped as Sapta Kanyas, along with a dedicated area for snake worship, where a snake hole is found alongside Naga idols.

The temple is adorned with numerous stucco images depicting Shiva, the Goddess, and various legends associated with them.

Happy travelling.
