Siruvapuri Subramanya Temple

Siruvapuri is a small village surrounded by fertile land near Chennai in South India. It is believed that Luv and Kush, the sons of Ram, captured the horse of Lord Rama; due to this, Rama's brothers fought with them and couldn't succeed; ultimately, Rama himself faced his sons in the battlefield in this site. Due to this, the site is named as Siruvarpuri or Siruvapuri. (In Tamil language, the word "siruvar" means "boy").

Siruvapuri has three old temples, one for Subramanya, one for Shiva, and the last one for Vishnu. Out of these three temples, Subramanya's temple is the most popular one.

Siruvapuri Subramanya temple is small, but very old. The 14th century Subramanya's devotee Arunagirinathar has sung about Siruvapuri Subramanya.

Siruvapuri Bala Subramanya temple has Subramanya as the presiding deity who appears with four hands. In the sanctum itself opposite to Subramanya idol you can find a small idol of Arunagirinathar. The unique feature of the temple is the green granite idol of peacock near the flag post.

Next to Subramanya shrine, you can find the shrines of Annamalai (Shiv Linga) and Goddess Unnamalai. Ganesh idol is also found near these shrines. Another unique feature of the temple is the metal idols of Subramanya with Valli in the wedding posture. This is a rare scene in the form of idols.

The corridor of the temple has the idols of Bhairav, Surya, Naga (Snake) and Venkat Rayar. There is a Maragada Vinayakar (green granite) shrine and another shrine for Subramanya named Moolanathar. It is believed that if one places brick behind the shrine of Moolanathar, he/she will get his/her wish of getting a new home fulfilled. There is a shrine where bricks are kept; people worship that as Muneeswarar. Chandikeswarar and small Navagraha idols are also found in this temple.

Happy travelling.
