The Queen's Necklace - Marine Drive

Once my Mumbai friend asked me, "What is the most beautiful site in Mumbai?"I replied to him - "Juhu beach".

After he took me to a heavenly place named Marine Drive, I can no more call Juhu the best one. "It's definitely Marine drive....that is the best place in Mumbai...at least as far as I know."

Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra state, is India's commercial capital and one of the most happening cities of India. Marine Drive is an upturned 'C'-shaped six-lane concrete road, which runs up to 3 km distance along the coastline, a part of the Arabian Sea. This avenue connects Nariman Point with Malabar Hills. The most striking aspect of the route is the esplanade next to the road, where people come to view the sunset and enjoy the sea breeze
.

It is a picturesque view to find palm trees lined up along the road. It also has a lovely walkway to take a stroll or jogging. You can also enjoy the view of some higher-end hotels on the other side of the road. For most people from other India's coastal cities, it would be a different experience to watch tall buildings on the other side of the sea (due to C-shaped roads).

No one can forget the 26/11 attack on Oberoi and Taj hotels of Mumbai, which happened on 26th November 2008. Oberoi hotel is the tall building that you see in this picture, located on Marine Drive road. It was one of the targets for terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai attack.

Chowpatty beach, which lies at the northern end of the road, is famous for local foods. At nights, Marine Drive looks stunningly illuminated, with lights, and if seen from some elevated point beside the road, it resembles a necklace, and hence this place got the name "Queen's necklace".

.

If you leave Mumbai without visiting this place, you will definitely regret that.

Happy travelling

  1. Marine Drive is really a beautiful place in Mumbai. I have visited the place practically hundreds of times. However there are many more places in Mumbai which are equally or more beautiful. Every one must visit atleast once..........Ramchandra Karnik
