A Mesmerizing Experience: Kathakali and Kalari Show in Munnar

Munnar, known for its stunning landscapes, also offers cultural experiences that are truly captivating. On my recent visit, I attended a performance that showcased two of Kerala’s most revered traditions: Kathakali and Kalaripayattu. The evening was an immersive journey into the heart of Kerala’s artistic heritage.

The show began with a unique experience—the live makeup session of the Kathakali artist. Watching the transformation unfold before my eyes was fascinating. The precision and attention to detail in applying the vibrant colors and elaborate facial designs were mesmerizing, providing a glimpse into the meticulous preparation behind this classical dance form.

Once the makeup was complete, the Kathakali performance commenced. Known for its expressive storytelling and colorful costumes, Kathakali has its roots in Kerala and dates back to the 17th century. The performance I witnessed brought to life scenes from the ancient epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The combination of lively acting, soulful music, and powerful percussion created a mesmerizing experience, leaving the audience in awe.

The second half of the show featured Kalaripayattu, Kerala’s ancient martial art. Dating back hundreds of years, Kalaripayattu is considered the ‘Mother of martial arts.’ This traditional combat style is a remarkable blend of strength, agility, and grace. The performance showcased all four forms of Kalaripayattu: Mey Payattu (physical training), Vadi Payattu (stick combat), Ayudha Payattu (weapon combat), and Adi Thada (hand combat). The display of skill was breathtaking, particularly the fire and sparks at the end, making it a performance to remember.

If you find yourself in Munnar, this show is not to be missed. It offers a deep dive into Kerala’s cultural heritage and provides an unforgettable experience of art and tradition.

Happy travelling.
