Museum Theatre

Modeled after the Second Globe Theatre of London, the semi-circular-shaped Museum Theatre is a unique structure in Egmore Museum Complex in Chennai.

The Museum Theatre, constructed in 1896 CE by the Britishers, exhibits the Indo Saracenic style of architecture.

The inner walls of the theatre are plastered with lime mortar, whereas the exterior walls have the exposed wire-cut brick architecture.

The entire building is placed on a high raised plinth. The 500+ seater of the main hall is accessed through a curved verandah with a row of columns and hemispherical arches. Two pillars flank each entrance. The cornices of those pillars are adorned with stucco ornamentation works. The rear side of the building is rectangular.

It was a favorite site for the Britishers where a lot of English Plays were performed. Even after the independence of India, the place was the venue for many historical events. The site definitely warrants a separate booklet with a list of all plays and events collated.

It is one of the most beautiful surviving British period heritage structures of Chennai.

Happy travelling.
