Malola Narasimha Temple of Chennai
Amidst the lively ambiance of Chennai's bustling Velachery locality lies the serene haven of Malola Narasimha temple. Nestled on a tranquil street in Balaji Nagar, this temple stands in quiet contrast to the vivacity of Phoenix Mall, the congested lanes of Velachery, and the bustling By-pass Road that surround it. Unbeknownst to many of the city's denizens, this hidden gem beckons those in search of spiritual solace. Allow me to illuminate this sacred site in the following article.
Malola Narasimha, one of the nine forms of Narasimha, finds residence here. It's essential to note that Velachery boasts an older Yoga Narasimha temple, which should not be confused with the one under discussion.
The temple stands as a two-story structure, resembling a traditional independent house, devoid of the towering vimana typically associated with such shrines. In 1994 CE, Sri Narasimha Dasar established the Narasimha Peetam within these walls. In 2002 CE, this humble math attained temple status following the installation of a stone idol and utsava image of Narasimha.
Devotees adhering to strict dress codes are welcome here, with men required to wear dhotis and women sarees. The temple maintains a stringent prohibition on leather products.
The ground floor houses a modest collection of tiny stone images, including Ganesha, Nagas, Hanuman, Mari Amman, and the founder of this peetham or possibly his Guru.
Ascending to the first floor, you'll find the sanctum, home to the majestic seven-and-a-half-foot Akasha Narasimha and Lakshmi. The bronze image of Narasimha, along with Lakshmi, named Malola Narasimha, is another cherished resident of the sanctum. The temple derives its name from this utsava deity, with Garuda gazing reverently toward the sanctum.
Adjacent to the sanctum lies a sub-shrine adorned with various images, including Panchaloha icons of Garuda, Prahalada, and Narasimha with his two consorts. This sacred space also houses exquisite images carved from Fig wood, featuring Kalyana Narasimha (Narasimha and Lakshmi seated together), Yoga Narasimha, and Hanuman.
As you embark on your spiritual journey, discover the serene haven of Malola Narasimha temple in Velachery—a sacred oasis tucked away amidst the vibrancy of the city.
