Ambika Kalna, popularly known as Kalna, is a town located in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal state in India. It is located at a distance of around 80 kms from Kolkata, one of the important cities of India. The town has a popular temple dedicated to Lord Shiva called as 108 Shiva temple. Let us explore about this site in this article.

The 108 Shiva temples of Kalna was built by the King Teja Chandra Bahadhur in 1809 CE to celebrate the transfer of ownership of the royal estate of Bishnupur. The temple complex contains 108 temples of Bangla Chala architectural style. (The Bangla temple architecture is broadly classified into two categories - Chala (slope roof) and Ratna (Pinnacle). Some temples even follow the mixture of both the styles.)

All the temples are arranged in two concentric circles separated by a well maintained beautiful lawn. The outer circle consists of 74 temples enshrining black colored and white colored Shiva Lingas alternatively. The inner circle consists of 34 temples enshrining only while colored Shiva Lingas. All the temples are similar in size and design. There is no central or main shrine. The 108 temples are also called as Nava Kailasha temples.

Happy travelling.
