Melmaruvathur, a small village, located near Chennai city in South India, has emerged as a major town thanks to Adi Parasakthi Peetam.

Adi Parasakthi Peetam is one of the most popular Hindu Goddess temples in Tamil Nadu state. It is claimed that there was a neem tree stood in the place where the main shrine is located today. The tree was considered as a holy tree in 1960s and it slowly emerged as a religious place. The person Melmaruvathur Adigalar by name constructed the temple in the late 1970s. In the last 40 years, the temple has become so popular that the temple trust runs so many educational institutes and hospitals.

There are people who believe Adigalar as the Goddess or saint. The temple has a huge complex today. However, unlike the other Hindu temples there are not many idols. The main shrine has the  small idol of Adi Parasakthi. Apart from that, there are sub-shrines for Sapta Mata, Naga (snake God) and Pratyingara Devi (the Lion Goddess).

Happy travelling.
