Shimla aka Simla is the most popular hill station in India. It is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh state of India. This charming hill station of Himalayas was one of the most favorite sites of Britishers. They loved the city too much that they made it as the summer capital of India in 1864 CE. Discovered by the British in 1819 CE, the city retains its colonial heritage.

Although Shimla can be reached by road, if you want to enjoy the beauty of the region thoroughly, it is advisable to take the toy train from Kalka at the foothills. The 90 kms train journey is one of the must haves in your Shimla travel experience.

The city has pleasant climate throughout the year and extremely cold during the winter. However, if you want to enjoy snow you should visit Kufri, 16 kms from here, at a height of 8600 feet. Kufri is popular for winter sports. A picturesque zoo is also located on top of the hill. You can take a breathtaking view of Himalayas in Chharabra valley located en route.

The Mall is the main attraction of the city. It has a lot of eateries, restaurants and shops. The Ridge and Scandal Point are two important meeting points of the Mall. Some of the important British period buildings including the Christ Church are located here.

The city named after the Hindu Goddess Shyamla Devi has many important Hindu temples. It is a different experience to get spiritual in this romantic hill station. The prospect hill has a temple of Kamna Devi at an altitude of 2155 m. Situated at an altitude of 1975 m, the Sankat Mochan temple of Hanuman commands an excellent view of the city. There is a temple dedicated to Tara Devi nearby.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Studies is an elegant building which is worth visiting. The mansion is also called as Rashtrapati Niwas.

The city has many more attractions in and around. It is definitely an important place in India for those who love hills and cool climate.
