Mylapore Madhava Perumal Temple
Mylapore area can be considered as the heritage area of Chennai city in India. The most famous temple of Chennai, Kapaleeswarar temple is located in Mylapore locality. Apart from Kapaleeswarar temple, a lot of other important and ancient temples are located in Mylapore area. Madhava Perumal Temple is one such important and ancient temple of Mylapore. It is a Vishnu temple in the land which is normally associated with Shiva.
Legend:
As per the Brahmanda Purana, the Goddess Lakshmi was born to the sage Bhrigu in this temple's tank. Even Lord Vishnu pointed out this site as the appropriate site for performing penance to the sage Vyasa. This site was called as Madhavapuram and Mayapuri in those days. Also, the birth place of Peyalwar, one of the popular Vishnu deities and one of the twelve Alwars, is also located near this temple.
Temple Layout and Structure
The east facing temple has a beautiful five tiered tower. Many interesting stucco images are found on the tower. A mandap is found in front of the tower, where all the pillars have bas-relief images.
The east facing sanctum enshrines the big image of Madhava Perumal. He is found seated along with his two consorts, Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi, on his either sides.
The utsav murtis of Madhava and his two consorts, Amritavalli and Bhoo Varaha are also found in the sanctum.
The flag staff, bali peetha and Garud are found facing towards the sanctum.
In Ardha Mandap, many bronze idols are located. They include Ram-Sita-Lakshman, Vishnu-Sri Devi-Bhoo Devi, Madhava and Krishna.
In Maha Mandap, there are shrines of Peyalvar, Alwars, Senai Mudai and Ramanuj-Manavala Muni-Poigai Alwar-Bhoodat Alwar. All these shrines have their corresponding bronze idols.
There are separate shrines for Hanuman, Bhoo Varaha, Krishna and Ram-Lakshman-Sita. The corridor surrounding the main shrine has the shrine of Amrita Valli, the Goddess of the temple. The temple tank where the Goddess was born is present near the shrine of Amrita Valli. There is a separate shrine for Andal.
The Mukha Mandap and Maha Mandap have a lot of interesting and beautiful sculptures on the pillars.
