A historical town of India - Srirangapatna, Near Mysore

Srirangapatna, located at a distance of around 18 kms from Mysore, the heritage city of India, is a proper historical town. It is a small island town located on the banks of the river Cauvery (Kaveri). Those who visit Mysore city also go to Srirangapatna. Similar to Mysore PalaceMysore ZooBrindavan Gardens, and Chamundi Hills, Srirangapatna also remains an important travel destination of Mysore.

Ranganathaswami temple is the best tourist attraction in the city. Srirangapatna is named after this vast ancient temple. This 9th-century temple, built originally by the Ganga kings renovated later by Vijayanagara, Hoysala, and Wodayar kings, stands as a fine example of the blended architectural beauty of the Karnataka state of India.

Srirangapatna was a significant city during the Vijayanagara period. After the decline of the Vijayanagara kings, when the Wodayar kings came to power, importance was given to Mysore, and hence Srirangapatna lost its political significance. However, when Tipu Sultan came to power for a brief period, he made Srirangapatna his capital and regained its glory and historical primacy. Tipu Sultan fought bravely against the British and was killed in Srirangapatna. Apart from the Ranganathaswamy temple, all other sites related to tourism in Srirangapatna are somewhat related to Tipu Sultan. Tipu's Summer Palace, also known as Daria Daulat Palace, Juma Masjid, Tipu's tomb, Tipu's fort, and the site where Tipu was killed are important tourist spots.

When you get a chance to visit Mysore or Bangalore, ensure that you visit Srirangapatna without fail.

Happy travelling.
