The bachelor God is no more a bachelor here - Kalyana Anjaneyar Temple, Thailavaram, Chennai

Right from our childhood, we might know that Lord Hanuman is a bachelor. Hence, it becomes beyond our imagination to visualize him portrayed along with his consort. However, there is one temple where he is not considered a bachelor. That unique temple is located on GST High Road in Thailavaram village, near Guduvanchery, a Chennai city's southern outskirt.

Known as Kalyana Anjaneya Temple, here Hanuman (who is also known as Anjaneya) is found along with his consort Suvarchala Devi.

The gigantic icon of Hanuman is around eight feet tall. He has four arms, which itself is unusual. Suvarchala Devi is found as a bronze icon. There is a bell-like structure called Ghanta Stambha, which has the images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman sculpted.

As per an interpretation of Parasara Samhita, Hanuman married Suvarchala, the daughter of Surya. Based on that interpretation, she is represented as Hanuman's consort here.

When you are in Chennai, do not miss visiting this rare site.

Happy travelling.

  4. The information given is incorrect. The Anjaneya Murthy here is single and not with consort. Someone gave a wrong info and others have simple copied the same. I visited the temple today, 18.01.3023, and I have given authentic info.

    1. I visited the temple, spoke with priests and only then wrote this article. As I had mentioned in the article, you should observe the utsava deities and not the moolava.
