St. John's Church - Kolkata, India

St. John's Church, located at Council House Street near Maidan area of Kolkata city in India, is not only an important tourist site but also a historically important church. Only few know that this church which resembles the Greek architecture, is one of the first Anglican churches of India.

St. John's Church, which was built in 1787, houses a beautiful cemetry. This cemetry contains the tombs of many notable persons including Job Charnock, the founder of Kolkata city. The controversial monument commemorating those who died during 'Black Hole of Kolkata' is also located in this church.

The church having the artistically beautiful dome and beautiful sculptures should not be missed by any traveller. It is unfortunate that the church is neglected by the local people of Kolkata and you can find hardly anyone inside the church nowadays.

Happy travelling.
