Located within the leafy stretch of The Mall in Central Park, not far from the Literary Walk, stands one of the park’s most enduring musical landmarks, the Naumburg Bandshell. This semicircular neoclassical structure has hosted orchestral concerts, band performances, and public speeches for over a century, echoing with the cultural and civic spirit of New York City.

The bandshell was a gift to the city from Elkan Naumburg, a philanthropist and music patron who believed in the democratization of classical music. His earlier efforts included organizing orchestral concerts at an earlier wooden bandstand on the Mall. To mark the 50th anniversary of those concerts, Naumburg donated the present-day bandshell in 1923.

Built in the Beaux-Arts style, the structure features an elegant, open-air stage crowned by a grand, coffered half-dome ceiling. The dome’s acoustics were carefully designed to amplify sound without the use of modern amplification systems. Its rear wall is adorned with octagonal and hexagonal patterns, giving it an ornamental yet geometric symmetry. Two fluted columns with Ionic capitals frame the sides of the structure, and the wide stage can accommodate large musical ensembles.

A bronze plaque on the inner wall honors Elkan Naumburg, noting his role in inaugurating orchestral concerts "on the Mall" and his donation of the current bandshell in 1923.

Another plaque commemorates Edwin Franko Goldman (1878–1956), the composer and conductor who led the Goldman Band during the Guggenheim Concerts at this site. These concerts were a beloved summer tradition from 1923 to 1969, attracting New Yorkers of all backgrounds to enjoy classical and patriotic music in an open, public space.

Over the decades, the Naumburg Bandshell has served not only as a venue for music but also as a stage for speeches and gatherings, including civil rights events and political rallies. Despite proposals for its demolition in the past, public support has ensured its preservation as a part of Central Park's historical and cultural fabric.

Whether visited during a live performance or in quiet reflection, the bandshell offers a space to appreciate how music and architecture came together here to serve the public good.

How to Reach

The Naumburg Bandshell is located just north of the Literary Walk in The Mall, Central Park. The nearest entrances are at 66th Street and Fifth Avenue. From there, walk north into the park until you reach the arched structure facing south toward the promenade.

The Tallest Murugan of Chennai

Consecrated in March 2021, the 40 feet high Bala Murugan icon at Saveetha Medical College campus is the tallest image of Murugan in Chennai. Malaysia has 140 feet tall Murugan. In April 2022, the 146 feet tall image of Murugan was consecrated near Salem in Tamil Nadu. However, they are all stucco images. But, the one that we find on the college campus is a monolithic granite icon. Thus, it is the tallest stone icon of Murugan in the entire world. A stone weighing 320 tonnes was brought from Siruvambur near Wallajah, and it was carved to 140 tonnes to get this beautiful and gigantic sculpture.
