Among the many statues that celebrate literary and musical legends in Central Park, the Beethoven Monument stands out as a tribute to one of the greatest composers in Western classical music, Ludwig van Beethoven. This striking monument not only honors his musical genius but also carries symbolic references to classical inspiration and the universal language of music.

Located near the Naumburg Bandshell, just off the Mall, the monument was dedicated in 1884. It was New York’s first statue commemorating a composer, and it remains one of the few in the park devoted solely to a figure from the world of music.

The sculpture is composed of a bust of Beethoven, mounted on a tall pedestal. His head is slightly inclined, his gaze intense, and his expression solemn, reflecting the depth, passion, and inner turmoil often associated with his music. His hair looks slightly untidy, and the folds of his cravat and cloak are carved boldly, giving the sculpture a strong and striking look.

At the base of the pedestal stands a full-length statue of a classical female figure, draped in Greco-Roman attire, holding a lyre. She represents the spirit of music or poetic inspiration, anchoring the monument in allegorical tradition. The pedestal is inscribed simply with the name: “Beethoven.”

The monument was sculpted by Henry Baerer, a German-American artist known for his neoclassical works. His depiction of Beethoven captures both the idealized romantic image of the composer and his very real intensity. The inclusion of the female figure ties Beethoven’s legacy to the timeless ideals of classical art.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) revolutionized Western music with compositions that broke traditional forms and expressed profound emotion. From symphonies and piano sonatas to choral works like the Ode to Joy, his music continues to inspire generations.

This statue, quietly placed in a shaded corner of Central Park, invites reflection not only on Beethoven’s musical legacy but on the enduring relationship between art, nature, and public memory.

The Beethoven Monument is located just north of the Naumburg Bandshell, slightly off the main path of The Mall in Central Park. The nearest entrances are at 66th Street and Fifth Avenue.

The Tallest Murugan of Chennai

Consecrated in March 2021, the 40 feet high Bala Murugan icon at Saveetha Medical College campus is the tallest image of Murugan in Chennai. Malaysia has 140 feet tall Murugan. In April 2022, the 146 feet tall image of Murugan was consecrated near Salem in Tamil Nadu. However, they are all stucco images. But, the one that we find on the college campus is a monolithic granite icon. Thus, it is the tallest stone icon of Murugan in the entire world. A stone weighing 320 tonnes was brought from Siruvambur near Wallajah, and it was carved to 140 tonnes to get this beautiful and gigantic sculpture. The entire temple complex is designed in the shape of the Devanagiri letter "Om", which can be appreciated in the aerial view.  The west-facing gigantic sculpture is located atop the star-shaped pedestal.
