The Falconer Statue – Central Park, New York

Perched dramatically atop a rugged outcrop near the West 72nd Street entrance to Central Park in New York, stands a sculpture that evokes the spirit of medieval romance and noble sport, The Falconer. Graceful, poised, and full of movement, this bronze figure has captivated park visitors for generations.

The statue was created by George Blackall Simonds, an English sculptor, and was unveiled in 1875. It was gifted to the city by George Kemp, a wealthy English businessman, as a gesture of cultural enrichment during a time when Central Park was evolving into a hub of civic art.

The sculpture depicts a young falconer in Renaissance attire, frozen in the moment of releasing a falcon into flight. With his right arm fully extended skyward, the falcon balances on his gloved hand, its wings outspread and ready to soar. The falconer stands confidently, one leg forward and the other slightly bent, capturing a naturalistic sense of motion and anticipation. A sword is strapped at his side, and his head is turned slightly to the left, eyes lifted toward the bird.

The attention to anatomical realism and fabric drapery lends the statue a classical elegance, while the subject matter, a falconer engaged in a noble pastime, adds a touch of romantic medievalism to the surrounding natural landscape.

What makes the setting even more compelling is its placement. The statue is mounted atop a granite pedestal that rises from a rock ledge, giving the falcon the illusion of real flight. Surrounded by trees and set against open sky, the sculpture invites viewers to look upward,  both literally and metaphorically.

Though not among the most widely known of Central Park’s sculptures, The Falconer remains one of its most poetic. It evokes themes of freedom, aspiration, and harmony with nature, all key elements in the philosophy behind the park’s original design.
