Sculpted by John Steell, a prominent Scottish sculptor, the statue was installed in 1872, making it one of the earlier additions to the park’s sculptural heritage. The statue depicts Sir Walter Scott in a seated pose, with a calm, thoughtful expression. Draped in a cloak, he holds a quill in one hand and a book in the other, reflecting his deep connection with writing.

The folds of his garment, draped classically over his shoulders and knees, are deeply incised, giving texture and movement to the bronze. The figure's wavy hair is rendered with careful attention to detail, and the gentle tilt of the head conveys introspection. 

At his feet rests a dog, symbolizing loyalty and perhaps inspired by his beloved pet Maida.

The detailing of the statue, from the realistic folds of his cloak to the carefully crafted facial features, reflects the neoclassical style common in 19th-century public monuments. The pedestal is inscribed with the name “Walter Scott” and includes a tribute to his literary contributions.

Walter Scott (1771–1832) was one of the most influential writers of the 19th century. Known for novels like Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and Waverley, he is credited with popularizing historical fiction. His works shaped romantic nationalism and brought Scottish history and folklore to global attention.

The Tallest Murugan of Chennai

Consecrated in March 2021, the 40 feet high Bala Murugan icon at Saveetha Medical College campus is the tallest image of Murugan in Chennai. Malaysia has 140 feet tall Murugan. In April 2022, the 146 feet tall image of Murugan was consecrated near Salem in Tamil Nadu. However, they are all stucco images. But, the one that we find on the college campus is a monolithic granite icon. Thus, it is the tallest stone icon of Murugan in the entire world. A stone weighing 320 tonnes was brought from Siruvambur near Wallajah, and it was carved to 140 tonnes to get this beautiful and gigantic sculpture. The entire temple complex is designed in the shape of the Devanagiri letter "Om", which can be appreciated in the aerial view.  The west-facing gigantic sculpture is located atop the star-shaped pedestal.
