St. Francis Xavier's Church in Broadway

The locality, Broadway, part of Old Madras, was planned and developed in the 1780s. Broadway, though it appears to be a misnomer today, was a prominent commercial thoroughfare in the 19th century.

In the 1800s, the Catholics of Broadway had to travel all the way to St. Mary's Co-Cathedral in St. George's Fort for masses and services. Hence, there was a need for a separate church on Broadway. Thus, St. Francis Xavier's Church was constructed. It was inaugurated on 3rd December 1866 and sanctified with Fr. D. Doyle as the first priest.

The Church on the vast campus and the Don Bosco school located next door are administered by the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), an international organization. The towers of the 150 years old Church are adorned with the images of St. Francis, Jesus Christ and Mother Mary.

Happy travelling.

  1. I studied in the school st Francs Xavier's at Broadway. It was from 1981 to 1988. There's another school named our lady's centre in the same campus. Initially one has to study there, take up an entrance exam in std 4 to join in std 5 at FX . Now I'm 40 plus. Still my school memories at these 2 schools stay fresh in my mind. The early education that I acquired there is something I still cherish and I'm grateful for it.
