Chennai ICF Railway Museum

Rail Museum located in Chennai city, the gateway to South India, is a unique and interesting tourist site. However, it is unfortunate that it is being neglected by many citizens of Chennai. Even most of the people in Chennai are unaware that there is such a museum located in their city.

Rail Museum is located in ICF area near Villivakkam  in Chennai. The surroundings of the site where the Rail Museum is located is the residential area of Indian Southern Railway staff. The locality is comparatively clean and green and also less congested. Well, there is at least some benefit for this museum to be unknown to the public. :-)

Indian Railways has a history of around 150 years. In order to display and showcase the artifacts of heritage pertaining to Indian Railways, the Railway Museum was started in Chennai in 2002 CE. There is another railway museum in New Delhi, the capital city of India.

Railway Museum of Chennai would be the ideal picnic spot if you are planning to visit along with your kids. The toy train is one of the major attractions for children in the railway museum. There is a children's park too. The Railway Museum has two indoor exhibits. One exhibit has some running model of trains. Another indoor gallery has a lot of models of different kinds of railway coaches of various periods. I never knew that there used to be double-decker trains and all. It is really amazing to find such rare models over here. The indoor gallery also houses a lot of old materials such as clock, used by railways in the past, and also various wooden models of trains. It also has some old railway photographs on the display.

The highlight of the railway museum is the outdoor exhibit. You can find various kinds of coaches, engines, bogies and trolleys in the outdoor exhibit. Be it steam engine, Himalayan Mountain (Narrow Gauge) steam engine, diesel locomotive or electric locomotive, it is really a wonderful experience to watch all these in a single site. It is interesting to know that steam engine was used as ploughing engine in England in 1800s. Various kinds of railway cranes are present in this museum, which cannot be normally seen anywhere else.

Railway museum at Chennai is definitely a unique tourist site that should be there in your Chennai travel itinerary.

Happy travelling.
