Iruppu Falls, Coorg

Iruppu Falls in Coorg is one of the most important waterfalls in the Coorg region. It is located at a distance of around 50 kms from Madikeri city.

We can reach only till the base of the hill in your vehicle. We have to climb concrete steps and slightly rocky areas for about 0.75 km to reach the waterfalls from the base. The entire path is densely wooded. There are seating areas on the way for us to sit, relax, and enjoy the waterfalls' sight.

Iruppu falls originate in the Brahmagiri hills and presents a majestic sight with water cascading down from a height of 170 ft. The falls become a part of the Lakshmana Teerth river in the plains.

The roaring waters of the Iruppu falls coupled with the picturesque surroundings make it a great picnic spot.

If you are a trekker, you can take the trek route,

which leads to the Narimale forest camp and then on to Brahmagiri peak. You have to get permission from the forest department for trekking.

Iruppu falls is also considered as a sacred place for Hindus. As per the legend, Lord Rama and Lakshmana passed through this place looking for Sita, who was abducted by Ravana. When Rama asked Lakshmana to fetch some water, the latter shot an arrow into the hills. Thus, the river Lakshmana Tirth was originated, which descends into a waterfall (Iruppu falls). At the base of the mountain, there is a temple of Lord Shiva (Rameshwara temple). Shiv Linga of the temple is believed to have been installed by Lord Rama.

When you go to Coorg, don't miss this extraordinarily beautiful site. Till then...

Happy travelling.
