A Hidden Gem in South Chennai

If you are from South Chennai, you cannot miss the bustling Jayachandran Textiles in Pallikkaranai, a landmark known for its crowded mega showroom. However, just behind this commercial hub lies a serene oasis in the form of Jeyachandran Nagar, and within this locality is the small yet enchanting Sadagopan Nagar. Here, amidst the urban hustle and bustle, stands a tranquil temple privately run by a devout family, offering an unexpected retreat from city life.

Established in the 1990s, the Sadagopan Tiru Narayana Swami Divya Prabanda Paathasala began as a paathshala, a traditional school dedicated to the study of Divya Prabandam, the revered collection of 4,000 Tamil verses sung in praise of Vishnu by the Alvars. Over time, this humble institution evolved into a temple, providing both spiritual and educational nourishment to its visitors.

At the heart of this peaceful sanctuary is the sanctum, enshrining a strikingly beautiful icon of Vishnu. This deity, standing gracefully with four arms, holds a discus and a conch in his upper hands, embodying divine majesty. He is flanked by Maha Lakshmi and Andal on his either side. A small image of Garuda and bali peetham face towards the sanctum.

The Maha Mandapa houses two remarkable bronze images of Sadagopan, a stone icon of Narasimha and a bronze image of Selvamudaiyan Pettai Arayar Rama Bharati Swami, a revered saint. Adjacent to this mandapa, in an extended courtyard, there is Rama, holding his bow and arrow, with Hanuman standing obediently by his side with folded hands, epitomizing devotion and service.

Despite being a relatively recent construction, the temple’s vimana (super structure) is crafted following traditional architectural principles, giving it a timeless and beautiful appearance. The intricate details and aesthetic design of the vimana enhance the temple's overall ambiance, creating a visual and spiritual haven for visitors.

Adding to the temple's charm is its goshala, a dedicated space housing many cows.

Visit this quaint temple and experience a slice of tranquility and devotion in the heart of South Chennai.

Happy travelling.
