108 Feet Tall Hanuman of Delhi

Delhi is a city rich with landmarks and fascinating places to visit, each telling its own unique story. Among these is the Jhandewalan Hanuman Mandir in Karol Bagh, an attraction that was added to the cityscape about two decades ago. This temple, though typical of Delhi with its contemporary architecture and numerous marble images of various deities, stands out due to its gigantic stucco image of Hanuman.

Also known as Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir, the original temple is one of the oldest temples in Delhi. Maharaja Jai Singh constructed it in 1724 CE.



The most striking feature of the temple is its colossal Hanuman image, which was the largest in the world, when it was constructed in the early 2000s. (As on 2024, it is the 6th largest image of Hanuman.) Standing at an impressive 108 feet tall, this icon depicts Hanuman in a dramatic pose, tearing open his chest to reveal his beloved master Rama and consort Sita inside. At the base of this immense figure is a gigantic female form with her mouth wide open, serving as the temple's entrance.

The story behind this intriguing icon is rooted in the ancient epic of Ramayana. When Hanuman leaped from Mahendra Mountain to fly over the ocean towards Lanka, he faced several challenges. Samudra Raja, the Lord of the ocean, ordered Mount Mainak to assist Hanuman. The mountain grew in size to offer Hanuman a place to rest, but Hanuman, determined and focused on his mission, pierced through the mountain, breaking it apart.



After this, the Devas, curious to test Hanuman's power and ability, sought the help of Surasa, the mother of the Nagas. She took a gigantic form and blocked Hanuman's path, requesting him to enter her mouth to fulfill a boon from Brahma. Demonstrating his quick wit and extraordinary abilities, Hanuman assumed a tiny form, swiftly entered her mouth, and exited immediately, thus continuing his journey without delay.

The Jhandewalan Hanuman Mandir, with its awe-inspiring image and rich mythological backdrop, offers a unique blend of spirituality and grandeur. The entrance through the mouth of the gigantic female figure adds a layer of mythical charm, making a visit to this temple an unforgettable experience.

Angala Parameswari Temple in Putlur, near  Chennai  city of South India, is a unique temple. The Goddess is in the form of a pregnant woman in this temple.
