Founded over a century ago, Schaffter School has become a symbol of educational excellence in Tirunelveli. Its motto, "Disce aut discede," which translates to "Learn or Leave!" in Latin, reflects the school's strong emphasis on fostering a love for learning and personal growth among its students.

Schaffter Higher Secondary School holds a prestigious position as one of the oldest educational institutions in Tirunelveli, and its history is deeply intertwined with the remarkable individual it is named after Rev. Schaffter.

Rev. Henry James Schaffter was born into a family that had dedicated three generations to the field of education in the Tirunelveli district. His roots can be traced back to Nallur village near Alankulam. After pursuing his education in Ireland and obtaining his M.A., Rev. Schaffter returned to Tirunelveli in 1871. He served as a faculty member at C.M.S. English School on Courtrallam Road from 1876 to 1880. It is worth noting that the present location of the Western Block branch of Schaffter School is situated on this very site.

In 1880, the school was elevated to the status of C.M.S. College, with Rev. Schaffter assuming the role of Principal and playing a pivotal role in its success. During his tenure, the construction of the Main Block took place, and his unwavering dedication contributed to the college's growing reputation. Consequently, in 1897, the college was shifted from Courtrallam Road to its current location.

In 1918, the college underwent another relocation, finding its new home in Palayamkottai and adopting the name St. John's College. Rev. Schaffter passed away in 1920 and was laid to rest in Kodaikanal. Even to this day, an arch bearing Rev. Schaffter's name and a hostel stand in St. John's College campus, as enduring testaments to his forty years of dedicated service.

Meanwhile, the original location of the school continued to thrive, and it was in 1945 that Ben Albert bestowed the name "Schaffter High School" upon the institution. In 1978, Schaffter High School underwent a significant transformation, evolving into Schaffter Higher Secondary School.
