Poornakala Theatre: An Iconic Cine Hall in Tirunelveli

Discover Tirunelveli, a city that's a haven for cinema enthusiasts. Along with its famous temples and delectable Halwa, Tirunelveli is home to unique and visually stunning cinema halls that are a signature of the city.

Unlike traditional rectangular or box-shaped theaters, these cinemas offer a visual feast both inside and out. In the past, there were numerous theaters, such as Ratna, Parvati, Royal, Popular, Siva Shakti, and Central, giving movie-goers multiple options within walking distance. Among the favorites of the city is Poornakala cine theatre.

In the 1950s, there were only three cine halls: Popular Theatre, Royal, and Palace de Wales. Poornakala came later, opening in 1971. Situated in a prime location near the railway station and bus stand, Poornakala has become a go-to destination for those looking to pass time before catching their last bus/train.

For many years, Poornakala remained a favorite among the citizens and has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Unfortunately, it closed down in 2022, but the locals remain hopeful that it will soon reopen to delight them once again.

If you're a cinema lover visiting Tirunelveli, these unique cinema halls are a must-visit attraction. So, go ahead and indulge in the visual delight that these halls have to offer.

Happy travelling!
