Shaheed Minar - Kolkata, India

Shaheed Minar, a tall monumental tower, is one of the important landmarks of Kolkata. The monument stands near the Maidan area, not far from the bus stand, and the surrounding open ground has traditionally been a gathering point for many public meetings, rallies, and processions in the city.

The name “Shaheed Minar” literally means “Tower of Martyrs.” However, the monument was not originally built with this name. The 48-metre-high tower was constructed in 1848 by Major General Sir David Ochterlony, who served as a commander of the British East India Company’s forces. He built the monument to commemorate his victory in the Anglo-Nepalese (Gurkha) War fought between 1814 and 1816. Because of this, the structure was originally known as the Ochterlony Monument.

After India’s independence, the monument was renamed Shaheed Minar in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle.

The tower, with its distinctive architectural style that combines Turkish, Egyptian, and Syrian influences, stands prominently in the Maidan area and can be seen from a distance.

If properly promoted and maintained, this historic monument has the potential to become as popular a landmark for Kolkata as the Qutb Minar is for Delhi.

Happy travelling.
