Shaheed Minar - Kolkata, India

Shaheed Minar, a monumental tower, is an important landmark of Kolkata city of India. It is located near the bus stand in the Maidan area. Many processions and rallies traditionally start here.

The word "Shaheed Minar" means "the tower of martyrs". This 48 meters high monument was built in 1848 by Major General David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company's main force. He built this monument to commemorate his own victory in Gurkha War between 1814 and 1816. As it was built by Ochterlony, it was formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument.

If it is promoted by the Government and supported by the locals, it can become as popular as Qutb Minar of Delhi.

Happy travelling.
