Sharadambal Temple, Coimbatore

In the heart of Coimbatore’s bustling Race Course area stands a serene spiritual centre dedicated to the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom, Sharadambal, also known as Sharda Devi. The temple represents the spiritual lineage of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka.

The temple faces east and was consecrated in the year 1979. Its establishment is closely linked to the blessings of Sri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Maha Swamigal, the revered Jagadguru of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. A prominent industrialist from Coimbatore, seeking the Acharya’s guidance, was inspired to establish a shrine dedicated to Goddess Sharada in the city.

A generous contribution came from the well-known philanthropist Sulur Nanjunda Iyer, who donated one acre of land in the Race Course area for the construction of the temple. With the support and contributions of devotees, the temple was soon built and consecrated, thus creating a sacred link between Coimbatore and the ancient spiritual seat of Sringeri.

The presiding deity Sri Sharadambal appears in a graceful and serene posture. The Goddess is depicted holding a honey pot in one hand and a book in the other, symbolically representing sweetness of knowledge and the wisdom of sacred learning. Her calm expression and gentle presence evoke the ideals of learning, discipline, and spiritual illumination associated with the Sharada tradition.

Within the temple complex, devotees can also worship several other deities. The important shrines include Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher who established Advaita Vedanta; Sri Bala Vinayaka; Sri Bala Murugan; and Devi Chandika Parameswari. Together these shrines create a compact yet spiritually vibrant complex that attracts devotees seeking both learning and divine grace.

The rituals and worship practices performed here closely follow the traditions of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, preserving the same philosophical and devotional heritage. For devotees in Coimbatore and nearby regions, the temple serves as a local centre where the spirit of Sringeri’s Sharada worship continues to flourish.

Happy travelling.
