Empowering Devadasis: The Trailblazing Journey of the Upper Clapton School

The Upper Clapton School, situated on the same street as the magnificent Nellaiyappar temple in Tirunelveli, holds a prominent place in the local community as one of the oldest schools. However, only some individuals have shown interest in uncovering the fascinating historical details surrounding its origins, despite its 160-year history. The unique name of the school has also failed to pique curiosity among the townspeople.



Originating from the Clapton district in London, United Kingdom, divided into Upper Clapton and Lower Clapton, Ann Sutton, a Christian missionary residing in Upper Clapton, played a crucial role in establishing a school in Tirunelveli. The school was named after the Upper Clapton Society, formed by the wives of pastors. Emily Lewis took charge of the school, which commenced its operations in 1863, with a primary objective of educating girls from the Devadasi families. The school's location near Aram Valarththa Pura Mada Street, a locality with a significant Devadasi population, was strategic in catering to their educational needs.



While running the school, Emily Lewis encountered numerous challenges and threats from other societies in Tirunelveli. However, after a few years, Amy Beatrice Carmichael, an Irish missionary associated with the Zenana Mission, assumed leadership of the institution.

Although the school was established in 1863, the current structure, bearing the year 1893 embedded on its elevation, was constructed later. The presence of a Tamil Bible verse inscribed on the elevation further emphasizes the school's connection to Christian values and its integration of religious teachings.



In summary, The Upper Clapton School, with its rich historical background and its enduring commitment to education, holds a special place in Tirunelveli. Its location near the Nellaiyappar temple, along with the significant contributions of missionaries such as Ann Sutton, Emily Lewis, and Amy Beatrice Carmichael, has shaped its legacy. The school's current structure, erected in 1893, proudly showcases its heritage, accompanied by a Tamil Bible inscription.

Angala Parameswari Temple in Putlur, near  Chennai  city of South India, is a unique temple. The Goddess is in the form of a pregnant woman in this temple.
