If you live in India, it is unlikely that you would not have heard about Kedarnath or Badrinath. They are two of the most popular pilgrimages for Hindus. It is located on the Himalayas in Uttarakhand state of India. Near Kedarnath, around 40 kms from Sonprayag, a small village called Ukhimath is situated. Ukhimath is an important pilgrimage located on the Himalayas. It is located at a distance of around 40 kms from Rudraprayag. It is situated at an elevation of around 1320 meters. It is surrounded by beautiful snow capped peaks of Himalayas. During the extreme winter season, the idol from Kedarnath temple would be brought down here and worshiped in Ukhimath Omkareshwar temple.
As per the legend, the grand son of Lord Krishna was Anirudh. He got married to Usha, the daughter of Banasura in this site. The site was named as Ushamath after her, which was changed into Ukhimath later.
As per another legend, the King Mandhata, the ancestor of Lord Ram, performed penance towards Lord Shiva in this site.
