Mumbai aka Bombay - the commercial capital of India

Mumbai, formerly called Bombay, is the capital city of Maharashtra state of India. Even though New Delhi is the capital city of India, Mumbai is considered the commercial capital of India.

Mumbai has initially been under various kingdoms and later under Muslim and Mughal rulers. The city got significance during the Portuguese settlement. The city was started to be referred to as Bombay when the British took over its control. In the 18th century CE, Bombay became a commercially important city. In the 19th and 20th centuries CE, due to many commercial establishments and the Indian freedom movement, Bombay became one of the most influential cities of India.

As Marathi and Gujarati speaking people used to call the city Mumbai, it is believed that the city's name originated from the Goddess of the city "Mumba Devi". Then, somehow it became Bombay. Nevertheless, it is officially called "Mumbai" now and no more as Bombay.

Mumbai, aka Bombay, is the home for the Indian cine industry (Bollywood), and this is the city where the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is located. Almost all the MNC (multinational companies) have their branch in Mumbai city.

Mumbai is well connected and easily reachable by train, bus, and air. There are domestic as well as international airports in Mumbai.

Mumbai has a lot of sightseeing options within the city as well as around the city. Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Chowpatty beach, Juhu beach, Maha Lakshmi temple, and Siddhi Vinayak Temple are worth visiting Mumbai's places. Let me explore these places in detail in the forthcoming posts.

Till then....Happy travelling.

  1. It is the most rejoicing to me, a Mumbaikar by birth that you would be introducing Mumbai in your blog.I would be thankful to you if you take the readers in and around Mumbai to show them the real culture of this capital of Maharashtra. Mumbai belongs to whom is a total political question and I am not at all intending to go for it. Mumbai belongs to the fishermen (Koli in Marathi) and the credit for city's development goes to everyone from people from Gujarat, Konkan and all other parts of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Bengal.
I would be certainly watching your forthcoming posts with interest. I reserve my comments till then.
    With warm regards.
