Chennai city in the Tamil Nadu state of India has given many eminent personalities to this country. Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi is one among them. Dr. Reddi was a notable social reformer and a famous medical practitioner. She was the first woman legislator in British India and was the first female student to be admitted into a men's college. Although born in Pudukkottai, she performed all her social activities in Chennai. Hence, she is very much a part of the city.

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi, who worked for the welfare of women, founded Avvai Home on Besant Avenue in 1930 CE. It was started to provide shelter for abandoned women and orphans, irrespective of caste and creed. The land where the Home was started belongs to the Arunachaleswarar Temple of Tiruvannamalai. The land was leased for 50 years just for the fee of Rs. 10 per month.

Avvai Home started an elementary school in the beginning. The boarding and lodging for the girls were provided free of cost in the Home. Later, the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary School. A Teacher's Training Institute was also started by the Home later.

Avvai Home still stands in Chennai as evidence of excellent service to society by the eminent lady, Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi.
