Ponmar Perumal Temple

Ponmar, historically known as Tyaga Vinoda Nallur during the Vijayanagara period, is a village situated on the Medavakkam - Mambakkam High Road, approximately 15 km from Tambaram. In Ponmar, merely 0.5 km from the Main Road, lies an obscure temple waiting to be explored in this article.

Adjacent to the lesser-known Satyapureeswarar temple in Ponmar, the ruins of an unidentified Vishnu temple can be found. Sadly, this monument is in a state of disrepair, lacking any form of protection. Judging by its layout, it's evident that this temple once boasted remarkable beauty.

Given the historical context of the village and the nearby Satyapureeswarar temple, both dating back to the Vijayanagara period, it's plausible that the Vishnu temple also originated from this era. Regrettably, the deity's name remains unknown, and the temple, now dilapidated, lacks any recognizable features.

Recognized locally as the Perumal temple due to the Garuda relief image above the entrance, this site stands as a poignant example of our collective neglect and ignorance toward preserving our cultural heritage.

Happy travelling.
