Kalakkad Mundanthurai tiger reserve forest is the second largest protected area in Tamil Nadu state of India. It was formed in 1988 CE by combining two wild life sanctuaries, Kalakkad sanctuary and Mundanthurai sanctuary. It is situated in a very scenic hilly area of Western Ghats. About 14 rivers and 7 major dams are located within this forest.

Some of the beautiful locations such as Agastyar falls, Bana Teertham waterfalls, Manimutharu falls, etc. are located  in this forest area. The entire region is full of abundant natural resources such as rivers, waterfalls, streams and hills. To add more charm, some of the popular temples are located very near to this area. Manjolai tea estate is an important attraction near this site.

Although it is a tiger reserve and although it is claimed that there are more than 70 tigers and 70 leopards in this forest, it is very rare to get sight of them. You can get to see a lot deer, monkeys, peacocks, birds and giant squirrels. It's a nice place to enjoy the beauty of nature; it's one of very few places which has not been polluted or commercialized.
