Udupi town and surroundings in Karnataka state of India are popular for important Hindu temples. Koteshwar, a small town, located at a distance of around 30 kms from Udupi, has an important temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The adjoining big lake is more popular than the temple.
Lord Shiva is called as Kotilingeshwar in the temple located in Koteshwar. The temple is built in typical Kerala type temple architecture. The main shrine has a big idol of Shiv Linga. The Shiv Linga has face with two large eyes - a typical style how Shiv Linga is found in this region. There is a hollow inside the main shrine with a lot of small Shiv Linga idols. To view these idols, you may have to please the priest to get inside the main shrine.
The temple has two prakaras. There are two separate shrines found diagnolly opposite to the main shrine. One shrine is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and another to Dhandeswari (utsav idol - bronze idol).
A small shrine for Ganesha is located near the main shrine. The inner prakara has the idols of Ganesha and Sapta Matas and the shrines of Subramanya, Lakshmi, Mahisasura Mardini and Venkatramana. As usual in other Shiva temples, Nandi idol is found facing the main shrine.
The outer prakra has the shrines of Hanuman, Ganesha and Venugopal.
A big temple with quiet environment.
Happy travelling.
