Mammiyoor Temple, Guruvayur, Kerala, India

Guruvayur, the town having the famous Guruvayurappan temple, also has a Shiva temple called as Mammiyoor Shiva temple or Mammiyoor Mahadeva Kshetram. Mammiyoor temple is located at a distance of around 1 km from the Guruvayurappan temple. Similar to Guruvayurappan temple, it is also an ancient temple. There was even a period when Mammiyoor temple was more popular than Guruvayurappan temple. However, now Mammiyoor temple is a small temple in Guruvayur which attracts only a portion of devotees of Guruvayurappan temple.

It is one of the 108 Shiva temples believe to have been built by Lord Parasurama in Kerala. Lord Shiva is found in the form of Uma Maheswara in this temple. The temple has some of the beautiful mural paintings and also houses shrines for other deities such as Vishnu, Kartikeya, Ayyappa, Ganesha and Bhagavati.

It is believed that the pilgrimage to Guruvayur is complete only if you visit this temple after visiting Guruvayurappan temple.

Happy travelling.
