Ernakulathappan Temple - Ernakulam, Kerala, India

Ernakulathappan temple is the most famous temple in Ernakulam city, which is the commercial capital of Kerala state, India. Ernakulam and Cochin (aka Kochi) are called as twin cities, and they are almost considered as a single city.

As per the legend, Arujuna of Mahabharat period performs penance to weapons from Lord Shiva. Shiva disguised as a hunter and fought with Arjuna. After realizing that it was Lord Shiva, Arjuna made a Shiv linga out of mud and performed pooja. He also got the weapon named 'Pasupathastra' from Shiva. After a long time, a small boy named Devalan, a victim of curse, got this Shiva Linga and took it with him. He installed this Linga in Ernakulam and got rid of his curse. At his request, Shiva and Parvathi appeared here and exist in the form of Linga. This is the story of Shiva (Ernakulathappan) of this temple.

This ancient temple of Ernakulathappan is built in a typical Kerala temple architectural style. The main shrine has Ernakulathappan in the form of Shiv Linga. Apart from Shiv Linga, the temple also houses the other deities such as Parvathy, Ganesha, and Nagaraja.
