The village has an ancient and big temple of Lord Shiva called as Nageswarar temple. Near that temple, Sekkizhar Temple is located. Let us discuss about this site in this article. The famous Tamil scholar and poet Sekkizhar was from this village named Kundrathur. He lived in the 12th century CE during the period of Kulotunga Chola II. He was the author of Periya Puranam, which talks about the lives and greatness of 63 Nayanmars in detail. The temple of Nageswarar was built by Sekkizhar.
In memory of this great poet, a big mandap (hall) was constructed near Nageswarar temple in the recent past. This mandap is called as Sekkizhar Mani Mandap. In addition to that, to honor this great poet a temple was also constructed to him. It is an old temple though it is not clear how old the temple is. It is a rare and unique temple dedicated not to any God or Goddess; it is not a temple of even a seer or saint, but it is a temple of an old Tamil scholar and poet, Sekkizhar. This small temple is located in a lane opposite to Nageswarar temple. In the sanctum, the idols of Sekkizhar is enshrined. The temple has a prakara around the sanctum. There is no other shrine or idol found in this temple. Happy travelling.
