Chenglepet Kodandaramar Temple

Chengalpattu is an important town located near Chennai, the gateway to South India. The Kodandaramar Temple is one of the notable temples and local landmarks of Chengalpattu. It is situated in the heart of the town, hardly one kilometre from the railway station and bus stand.

The main shrine of the temple has a rare icon of Lord Rama seated in Pattabhisheka posture, the royal coronation form. Sita is also seen seated beside him, with her left leg raised and her right leg folded. Rama’s brothers, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna, along with a small icon of Hanuman, are also found around the divine couple in the sanctum. The bronze utsava icons of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman are also housed in the main shrine.

Near the main shrine, there is another shrine that enshrines the icons of Vaishnava saints and devotees, including a few Alwars, Mudali Andan and Ramanuja. There is also a separate shrine for Varadar.

This small old temple does not have a tower. However, it has a flagstaff and bali peetham, like a typical South Indian temple. A small shrine for Hanuman faces the main shrine.

The temple has one prakara, which houses the shrines of Perundevi and Veera Anjaneya. The icon of Veera Anjaneya is rare and striking, as Shaneeswara is shown beneath his feet. This form of Hanuman is highly popular in Chengalpattu, perhaps even more than the presiding deity of the temple.

One of the pillars in the temple has a bas-relief image of Lord Ganesha.

Happy travelling.
